Periodontal Disease (PD) triggers a complex stimulation of the host immune system by both innate and the acquired immunity. Studies reported in the literature demonstrates the involvement of the innate immune system in PD in several ways: activation and signaling Toll Like Receptor (TLRs), production of antimicrobial peptides such as defensins and cathelicidins and the important role of dendritic cells in mediating between the two immunologic responses. The adaptive immune response, in turn, albeit with different mechanisms of action, is closely related to the innate response, so that their activation occurs mainly by dendritic cells participating in the natural immunity. In vivo studies have verified the role of cytokines such as interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-17 (IL-17) and INF-γ during the development of PD, as well as the influence of humoral antibodies in cases of PD. This article aims to review how the host's immune responses are expressed against the PD.
