CRUZ, Laís Rueda; D'HYPPOLITO, Izabel Monteiro; BARJA-FIDALGO, Fernanda  e  OLIVEIRA, Branca Heloisa de. Is caries transmissible?" Information on caries transmission in children, found via Google® Search Engine. Rev. Bras. Odontol. [online]. 2017, vol.74, n.1, pp. 70-73. ISSN 1984-3747.

Objective: this cross-sectional observational study aimed to assess the type of information found on the Internet about the transmission of dental caries in children. Material and Methods: data was collected through an electronic search by entering the keywords "cáriepega" and "transmissão de cárie" in the Google® search box. A researcher recovered, read, and extracted the data of the first 30 records obtained from each search to an MS Excel™ spreadsheet. Data were analyzed by three researchers, using predefined criteria, in order to record the information that would explain caries transmission in children. Results: from 60 records, nine were redundant; hence, were analyzed once. Sites related to scientific articles (n = 4), images (n = 1), videos (n = 1), and sites with questions and answers (n = 1) were deleted. Moreover, one of the records was permanently unavailable (n = 1). Therefore, 43 records were retrieved, read, and analyzed. Twenty-five sites (58.1%) revealed that dental caries is a communicable disease; of these, 20% (n = 5) showed that the disease could be transmitted from mother to the child and 20% (n = 5) showed that other adults could also transmit the disease to the child. Transmission of this disease mostly occurs through a kiss (n = 19). Although caries is considered as a dysbiosis, this information does not seem to reach the population. Conclusion: this study reinforces the need for the construction of dental information dissemination channels based on evidence contributing to the popularization of science.
