OHUTI, PRISCILA; VIEIRA, SAMUEL NILO  e  MATOS, ADRIANA BONA. Influence of Saliva contamination on the bonding resistance of a two-step self-etching adhesive system. RPG, Rev. pós-grad. [online]. 2010, vol.17, n.1, pp. 07-12. ISSN 0104-5695.

The aim of this study was to detect the influence of saliva contamination on the bond strength (BS) of a two-step self-etching bonding system (SES) to dentine. Sixty bovine incisors were embedded in acrylic resin and ground to expose a flat surface of dentine, being obtained standard smear layer. Six groups (n=10) were assigned according to step in the bonding sequence when contamination occurred &91;before the acidic primer (G2 and G3), after the acidic primer (G4) and after the bonding resin (G5 and G6)&93;, and contamination treatment &91;dry (G2, G4 and G5) or rinse and dry procedure G3 and G6)&93;. Control group (G1) was free from saliva contamination. The two-step self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond) was carried out according to the manufacturer's instructions. Human saliva was introduced either before or after SES application and treated with air drying for 10 seconds, or by rinsing for 10 seconds and drying following application. Composite resin (Filtek Z-250,3M ESPE) was used to build specimens that were debonded in tension after 24 hours of storage in water at 37oC. The mean tensile BS values (MPa) for dentine &91;G1-24,27±(2,82); G2-18,71(±5,51); G3-19,90(±4,56); G4-17,54(±6,24); G5-5,95(±4,58); G6-6,91(±0,03)&93; demonstrated that saliva influenced significantly BS, but not saliva treatments, while the phase in which contamination occurred influenced BS. It was determined that saliva contamination impaired adhesion to dentine when it occurred after bond light curing. Among the tested contamination treatments, none was sufficient to recover the BS in the contamination-free group.
