GIL, CIBELLE; DUTRA, MARCELO EDUARDO PEREIRA; KODAIRA, SÉRGIO KEIDI e OLIVEIRA, JEFFERSON XAVIER DE. Analysis by magnetic resonance imaging in symptomatic patients of the presence of joint effusion in temporomandibular joint related to articular disc position. RPG, Rev. pós-grad. [online]. 2010, vol.17, n.1, pp. 19-24. ISSN 0104-5695.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is considered the most complex articulation of the human body. Like other joints of the musculoskeletal system it can be affected by the same diseases and disorders, such as disc displacement, degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis - OA), inflammatory arthritis and synovitis. Based on reports obtained by the analysis of images in standard sagittal TMJs of symptomatic patients referred for magnetic resonance exam the presence of joint effusion arising from the positioning of the disc was evaluated. The sample consisted of 148 TMJs in 74 symptomatic patients. The results of statistical tests revealed that joint effusion is associated with the disc position.
