CONCEICAO, Luciana Domingues; MAGRIN, Tânia; GOMES, Ana Paula Neutzling  e  ARAUJO, Lenita Maria Aver de. Retrospective study in tongue biopsies: epidemiologic aspects. RFO UPF [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.1, pp. 11-19. ISSN 1413-4012.

The oral cavity is affected by different pathologies, where many of which are found in the tongue. The aim of this work was to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological aspects of tongue's lesions submitted to biopsy, and identify their more prevalent characteristics. 806 records were selected from 17.611 histopathologic records of the CDDB/FO related to tongue biopsies, where 50.5% in female and 49.3% in male patients. The reactive lesions, specially the fibroma, were the most common diseases (27.4%), followed by malign epithelial pathology (22.7%), which almost all were carcinoma espinocelular (CEC). Nodule fundamental lesions (43.4%) and ulcer (21.3%), with dimension up to 5 mm (34.7%), and with evolution from 1 to 5 years (18.2%), were the most prevalent lesions. The most affected people were on their sixties (21%). The clinical diagnosis registered in the biopsies charts agreed in relation to the histopathological diagnosis in 57.72% of the cases. With respect to CEC, the greatest prevalence was observed in males on their sixties. This study tries to contribute to trace an aspect of tongue pathologies and, above all, provide the dentist with knowledge about stomathology, aiming at improving strategies of health promotion and prevention.
