The work on health involves situations that promote satisfaction to the professionals of the area, as well as stress and suffering. Therefore, it is very important to consider existence of these aspects in order to build proposals of work organization aiming at the assistance qualification. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this qualitative, exploratory study is to verify the relationship between the surgeon dentists' satisfaction and suffering in their work. METHODS: The data were collected by means of interviews with sixteen surgeon dentists who worked in the primary health in a city in the southern Brazil. The data analysis was based on a content analysis of Bardin, articulating the aspects which promote satisfaction and the ones that cause suffering in the surgeon dentists' work. RESULTS: The results showed that the patients' satisfaction from the service received influenced the surgeon dentists' satisfaction. Following are some factors that cause significant suffering: excessive workload and low wages, physical stress, conflicting relationship between autonomy and market, and the enhancement of the private and liberal labor to the detriment of the public service. Conclusion: Therefore, we can conclude that sophisticated elements are involved in the work of these professionals, either linked to their profession or to current challenges of the work organization in basic health care; such elements participate in such a paradoxical manner in determining the workload as well as in the worker's subjective relationship with his or her work and in the greatest or lest satisfaction and/ or suffering possibility.
