PEIXOTO, Iza Teixeira Alves et al. Scientific evidence of Candida spp. colonization in periodontal pockets. RFO UPF [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.2, pp. 177-182. ISSN 1413-4012.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to present a brief literature review about the colonization of Candida spp. in periodontal pockets, their virulence factors and possible influence on the periodontal diseases. LITERATURE REVIEW: Although the buccal mucosa is considered the main reservoir of Candida spp., these microorganisms can be co-aggregate to bacteria in dental biofilm, being considered as an important factor for colonization process of periodontal pockets. In addiction, these yeasts possess some relevant virulence factors in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease, such as the capacity to adhere in the epithelium and to invade gingival connective tissues. Besides, Candida spp. can inhibit the function of polymorphonuclear neutrophils, as well as to produce enzymes as colagenases and proteinases that degrades imunoglobulins. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: The virulence factors of Candida spp. associated to the host susceptibility could play an important role on the inflammatory alterations related to the severe periodontal diseases.
