TAGLIETTA, Martha Furlan Aguiar et al. Impact of one health promotion program on dental caries prevalence reduction in pre-school children of Piracicaba - SP. RFO UPF [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp. 13-17. ISSN 1413-4012.

Aim: to evaluate influence of health promotion programs on caries prevalence in 1st year elementary schoolchildren from Piracicaba. Material and methods: a sample of 811 students was selected among children who attended elementary school first grade and received curative treatment and preventive dentistry in the FOP-UNICAMP/Prefeitura Piracicaba / Arcellor Foundation covenant. School Health Agents (SHA) selected children in: (1) date of school admission before 2007; (2) date of admission in 2007. DMFT/dmft data were collected and used to categorize children with dental caries history (caries ³ 1) and no history of caries (caries free). Data were processed by chi-square test and ANOVA for DMFT/dmft variables comparison. Results: children admitted before 2007 had DMFT/dmft average (1.03) and 2007 (1.78). Children admitted in 2007, 57.79% had DMFT/dmft = 0 and 42.21% DMFT/dmft ³ 1. Children admitted before 2007, 67.93% displayed an average DMFT/dmft = 0 and 32.07% DMFT/dmft ³ 1. Conclusion: this study demonstrates the importance of preventive / educational oral health promotion programs in early childhood schools.
