COLET, Daniela et al. Are dentistry students and professionals prepared to save lives?. RFO UPF [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp. 25-29. ISSN 1413-4012.

Introduction: The surgeon dentist faces, in the daily life of his work, the risk of being faced with emergency events involving general health. The emergency is defined as a situation where there can't be a delay in care, it has to happen at the right moment. Objectives: To verify that the pros and dental students are prepared for an event, before a cardiopulmonary arrest, effectively fulfill the cardiopulmonary resuscitation while avoiding unintended consequences, which can lead to death of the patient. Methods: The data were obtained using a questionnaire to evaluate the level of knowledge about the correct sequence of cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuver, applied to the graduation (of second to fifth year) and to the post-graduation students of the university. 142 questionnaires were obtained with consent. Results: Only 15% of the respondents considered the correct answer, compared to 85% of wrong answer. Conclusions: Dentists must be prepared to face an emergency situation to avoid unwanted consequences as the patient's death. The rate of success was very low. The Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques must be reviewed periodically, IF it is possible each year, because the majority of the students did not assimilated the correct technique or forgot it, because they did not received a practical training and the low incidence of this emergency.
