IWAKI, Lilian Cristina Vessoni et al. Morphometric study of the distortion of the mandibular foramen in panoramic radiographs as an aid in intraoral vertical mandibular ramus osteotomy. RFO UPF [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp. 36-42. ISSN 1413-4012.

Introduction: Patients with skeletal deformities whose magnitude is excessive solving with Orthodontics treatment, may be submitted to surgical procedures like: intraoral vertical osteotomy of the mandibular ramus (VOMR). For implementation, there is a necessity of suitable planning, achieved with exams, such as panoramic radiography. Objetive: Based on distortion factors of the radiographies, the aim of the present work was to calculate the location and degree of distortion of this technique in the region of mandibular foramen (MF). Materials e Methods: For the study, was realized the measure of the shortest distance from the posterior border of the mandibular ramus to the MF as well as the smallest distance of the anterior to the posterior border of mandibular ramus in macerated human jaws and their projected images on the radiographs. Results: Was observed no statistically significant difference in measurements of the right and left sides, the distance between the mandibular foramen to the posterior border of the ramus and the prevalence, location and entrance of the mandibular foramen is at third middle mandibular ramus region. Conclusions: Therefore, the panoramic radiography is a handy and proper technique, which allows to calculate the distortion and location of the MF, and used to plan VOMR.
