CANALI, Gabriela Damke et al. Comparative study of bone optical density obtained in panoramic radiographs and bone densitometry in non-hysterectomized and hysterectomized women. RFO UPF [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.2, pp. 149-153. ISSN 1413-4012.

The most appropriate method to evaluate bone structures is bone densitometry. Because of the difficulty of conducting this review, studies have been accomplished in order to optimize the identification of individuals with greater potential risk of having low bone mineral density and using programs and systems of digital images for effective screening. Objective: the aim of this study is to determine radiographic bone density of the mandible, measured in pixel intensity of non-hysterectomized and hysterectomized women aging from 40 to 60 years old. Methodology: the sample is consisted of 67 women, where 29 were hysterectomized and 38 were non-hysterectomized. They were all taken to the examination of density and the accomplishment of a panoramic radiography. The digitization of the radiographs was achieved by using a flatbed scanner fitted with player transparency and the images were stored on a computer with the TIFF format. The gray levels (pixel values) of the study areas were analyzed with Image Tool TM 3.0 (UTHSCSA, San Antonio, Texas USA) with the histogram tool, which measured the gray levels of the selected areas. After analyzing the bone density of panoramic radiographs, a study with the degrees of densities found in radiographs of both groups was fulfilled. Results: The average value of pixels for the non-hysterectomized group was 79.61 and for the hysterectomized group was 80.81. Conclusion: Therefore, based on the value of IP (pixel intensity) in digitalized panoramic radiographs, no significance differences were found between the hysterectomized and non-hysterectomized groups.
