The objective of this study is to understand some relevant aspects about the spectroscopic and microscopic techniques analysis used in dentistry. After a literature review (2006-2011) in PubMed database, the scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were the most common techniques used for each characterization method (microscopy and spectroscopy). Therefore, other techniques have been used to perform material characterization in dental research.
