NOGUEIRA, Moisés da Costa Ferraz et al. Effects of platform switching in implant-supported rehabilitations: a literature review. RFO UPF [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.1, pp. 113-119. ISSN 1413-4012.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the use of platform switching in implant-supported rehabilitations. This system consists in using a prosthetic component of smaller diameter, connected to an implant platform with a larger diameter, therefore, not combined as conventionally. Literature review: Thirteen articles published between 2006 and 2011 were selected covering the consequences in the use of platform switching with relation to biological and biomechanical factors in implant-supported rehabilitations. Final considerations: In conclusion, the benefits and the indication for the use of such system were clear, highlighting the initial reduction in peri-implant crestal bone resorption and maintaining that level over the years, as well as the reduction of the pressure on the bone tissue adjacent to the implant neck. Therefore, even in the presence of possible disruption caused by this system, as the rise of the tensions in the region of the screw and the prosthetic component, the use of Platform Switching is attractive for implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitations.
