Objective: To present the prevalence of women victims of violence notified by Sinan, during 2009 and 2010 in Porto Alegre, and to characterize the cases regarding age, race, disability, place of occurrence, type of violence, mean of aggression, consequences of the violence, nature of the wound, injured part of the body, relationship with the victim, evolution, and referral. Methods: A database was set up, recorded, and studied using information extracted from Sinan reports. Results: From the total of 1278 notifications used, it was found that the mean age of women was 15.5 years old, mostly Caucasian, 66%. It was observed that the domestic environment (75.5%) favored the most prevalent type of violence in this study, which was sexual (56.7%), mainly afflicted by friends and acquaintances (16.4%). Beating was the most frequent way of aggression, with 38.6%, bringing as a consequence at the time of notification, the posttraumatic stress disorder (9.8%) and hospital discharge (80.9%) as the case evolved. Bruise was the most found nature of lesion (9.8%), being the head the most prevalent spot of attacks (10.4%). Conclusion: The role of the dentist is extremely important in diagnosing the cases, as well as in treatment, counseling, notification, and referral of women victims of violence.
