Objective: To describe the profile of dental students enrolled at a University of South of Brazil during the beginning and ending stages of the course. Methods: This cross-sectional research, conducted throughout the second semester of 2011 and enlightened by the questions of ENADE (National Student Performance Exam), assessed the probable general and specific knoknowledge acquisition of juniors and seniors of the Dentistry School of the University of Passo Fundo (UPF). A questionnaire composed by multiple-choice questions, taken from Enade/Brazil Dentistry theoretical test (2004, 2007, and 2010), was applied to classes of juniors (first semester of the course) and seniors (last year of the course). All students from these two classes were invited to participate. Total respondents were 65 students, where 33 were juniors and 32 were seniors. The questionnaire included social-economic, general knowledge, and specific knowledge (Dentistry) questions that were analyzed through percentages. Results: It was verified that there was a ‘gain' of general and specific knowledge during the students education: the overall correct questions obtained by juniors were n = 83, and by seniors were n = 163. Conclusion: It was suggested that dental students of UPF have been acquiring human and ethical knowledge to their professional training, alongside technical-scientific knowledge.
