The problem of cancer in Brazil acquires particular relevance due to the epidemiological profile this disease has presented. Although there is a perceived decline in death rates from oral cancer, this number has lately been increasing in young patients. Objectives: To draw the profile of Dentistry studies developed in Brazil over the last 5 years (2007-2011) regarding oral squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: It was carried out a systematic review of papers about oral cancer presented at meetings of the Brazilian Society for Dental Research (SBPqO), from the year 2007 to 2011. The searches with the terms squamous cell carcinoma, epidermoid carcinomas, spinocellular carcinoma, and oral squamous cell carcinoma resulted in 199 abstracts. Data were organized and presented using descriptive statistics. Results: A peak of publications in 2008 was verified; concentration of scientific production in the southeast region, however it was also verified a great contribution from the state of Rio Grande do Norte; predominance of observational and cross-sectional studies against interventional and longitudinal studies. Conclusion: Researches about oral squamous cell carcinoma constitute a relatively small percentage of the Brazilian dental scientific production over the last 5 years. The prioritization of observational studies disrupts the continuity of scientific knowledge and accumulates information that does not enhance therapeutic and prognostic conditions for patients with oral cancer.
