SARTORETTO, Suelen Cristina; BELLO, Yuri Dal; BONA, Alvaro Della  e  AZEVEDO, Marina Sousa. Scientific evidence for the diagnosis and treatment of TMD and its relation to occlusion and orthodontics. RFO UPF [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.3, pp. 352-359. ISSN 1413-4012.

Introduction: Several concepts involve the etiology of TMD and its relation to occlusion and orthodontics, which has been subject of discussion and controversy, complicating the diagnosis and the construction of an effective therapy for the disorder. The relationship of these three areas has been widely questioned and it is very likely that a paradigm shift is happening concerning TMD. Literature Review: Etiology is multifactorial and complex, so the attempt to isolate a universal cause has not been successful. Signs and symptoms may manifest in several ways and, moreover, inadequate treatments may lead to iatrogenic therapies, allowing the chronicity of symptoms. The aim of this study was to present the existing information on TMD, considering its physiological character, etiology, diagnostic methods, and the different forms of treatment. Additionally, to discuss possible relationship with other areas of dentistry, especially orthodontics and occlusion, through a literature review of national and international databases (PubMed, Scielo, Bireme and Google Scholar). Final considerations: Although controversial, scientific evidence does not seem to support both orthodontics/ TMD and occlusion/TMD relationships. Nevertheless, it is important to stress that occlusal and orthodontic treatment, when correctly conducted, play a crucial role in dentistry since they are involved in several distinct and relevant aspects of function and esthetics of the stomatognathic system and, therefore, they should not be overlooked by dental professionals.
