SANT'ANA, Adriana Campos Passanezi et al. Porcine collagen matrix in root coverage and increase of keratinized gingiva width: a systematic literature review. RFO UPF [online]. 2013, vol.18, n.3, pp. 373-380. ISSN 1413-4012.

Objective: to assess the efficacy of porcine collagen matrix (CM) in root coverage (RC) and increase of keratinized gingiva width (KGW) around teeth and implants. Methods: randomized clinical trials were investigated on MEDLINE, comparing the efficacy of CM to subeptithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) and/or coronal advanced flaps (CAF) in RC, and comparing the MC to SCTG or free gingival graft (FGG) for KGW increase. Primary outcomes investigated were: complete root coverage (CRC), average percentage of root coverage (%REC), and an increase of KGW. Selection, assessment, and data extraction were independently performed by two reviewers. Results: a total of 20 articles were identified for analysis, however only 7 were included. From these, 4 assessed the efficacy of CM in RC in comparison to CAF, either associated or not to SCTG. Three of the studies showed higher CRC and %REC in the control group than in the test group. Three studies assessed the efficacy of CM in KGW increase in comparison to FGG and SCTG, with a significant increase observed in both groups (p < 0.05), with no difference between them (p > 0.05). CM resulted in similar or better color and texture match with surrounding tissues, shorter operative time, and less postoperative morbidity. Conclusions: these data suggest that CM is effective in the increase of KGW around teeth and implants, and it could be used as an alternative to SCGT in RC, reducing postoperative morbidity and surgery time.
