MARTINS, Luize Severo; SARTORI, Bruna; GIONGO, Caroline Comis  e  BARALDI, Carlos Eduardo. Perception of oral maxillofacial surgeons from Rio Grande do Sul on coronectomy. RFO UPF [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.1, pp. 75-80. ISSN 1413-4012.

Introduction: coronectomy is a procedure that removes the crown of an impacted lower third molar, keeping the roots, in order to avoid inferior alveolar nerve injury. Objective: to verify the knowledge about coronectomy by oral maxillofacial surgeons registered at the Council of Regional Dentistry of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil. Materials and method: the research was conducted through a questionnaire sent by e-mail, with 6 questions about coronectomy. Results: from the 376 professionals with a valid e-mail address, 39 (10.37%) answered the questionnaire. From these, 41.02% were specialists for more than 5 and less than 10 years, 38.46% eventually recommended coronectomy, and 64.10% said that the greatest advantage of the technique is the lower risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury. To verify whether there was relation between the time since specialization and the knowledge of the technique, Fisher's exact test was used and found no association (p=0.6662). There was also no relation between the time since specialization and the professional eventually recommending the technique or not (p=0.5842). Conclusion: according to the results obtained, despite being a known technique among professionals, it was either not frequently recommended or completely rejected (33.33%), even though literature shows positive results with specific recommendation and execution.
