NOBREGA, Danúbia Roberta de Medeiros et al. Assessment of oral hygiene level and periodontal condition of schoolchildren. RFO UPF [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.1, pp. 69-74. ISSN 1413-4012.

Objective: To assess the prevalence and severity of gingivitis in schoolchildren aged nine to twelve years with poor oral hygiene, and their relation to potential local risk factors. Subjects and method: It was a cross-sectional descriptive study assessing gingival conditions of schoolchildren from two public schools; the sample consisted of 36 subjects. The indices applied were Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), Bleeding on Probing Index (BPI), and Plaque Index (PI). Socioeconomic status was determined by the socioeconomic class of the students’ family. Data were recorded in the SPSS software version 20.0 for Windows™ and analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Bivariate analysis was performed with Student’s t test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Results: There was a prevalence of 100% of gingivitis in all students, and mild intensity was the most frequent outcome (97.2%). Additionally, a positive correlation was found between OHI-S and the number of bleeding surfaces. Conclusion: Schoolchildren showed high prevalence of mild gingivitis related to poor oral hygiene, which highlights the need for preventive activities encouraging the performance of effective daily oral hygiene.
