RODRIGUES GAMBA, Karla et al. Assessment of level of knowledge of dental surgeons on blood stains in the forensic context. RFO UPF [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.3, pp. 363-368. ISSN 1413-4012.

Objective: this study aimed to verify the level of knowledge of dental surgeons on aspects related to the forensic effect of stage blood on different surfaces, as well as to confirm the reproducibility of stain models proposed by Simonin1 (1966), varying incidence angles and surfaces. Methods: the sample consisted of dental surgeons from extension and specialization courses of the School of Professional Development of the Brazilian Dental Association, Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. To conduct the research, four types of stage blood stains were created with different morphologies ("smear", "puddle" or "contact", "runoff", and" sprinkling") on paper surfaces (A4 sheet); also, six other stains were created with varying angle (45° and 90°) on three different surfaces (jeans, cloth, and paper). Then, the sample individuals evaluated the images. The responses were tabulated and analyzed statistically. Results: 53.2% (n=33) of respondents answered the composition of stains correctly. Regarding the classification of stains, the "smear" type achieved a score of 82.3% (n=51) of right answers. The angulation showing more correct answers was 90 degrees, with 69.3% (n=43). Conclusion: it was possible to conclude that, although the majority of respondents had partial knowledge on the topic proposed, they were unaware that the expertise in trace elements such as stains or liquids from the oral cavity or present in it is one of the areas of competence for the work of the specialist in forensic dentistry.
