PEREIRA, Jozinete Vieira et al. Prevalence of odontogenic cysts and tumors in patients treated at the Paraíba Health Assistance Foundation: a retrospective study. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2010, vol.46, n.2, pp. 75-81. ISSN 1516-0939.

To evaluate the prevalence of odontogenic cysts and tumors in patients treated at the Paraíba Health Assistance Foundation (FAP), an observational, epidemiological, and retrospective study was performed by reviewing 2,268 dental files of patients treated between Janeiro 1999 and December 2008 at FAP. Data were collected by a single examiner, recorded in specific charts, and were analyzed according to the following variables: gender, age group, type of lesion (cyst or tumor), and localization (maxilla or mandible). The bivariate analysis employed the chi-square test with significance level set at 5%. The prevalence of cysts and tumors was 1.9%, with a higher incidence found in females (62.8%) and in the age group above 51 years (25.6%). The maxilla was more commonly affected (60.5%). No statistically significant difference between gender and type of lesion (p=0.249), or between localization and type of lesion (p=0.190), could be observed. Radicular apical cysts were the most frequent (51.7%), followed by dentigerous cysts (20.7%). Regarding the distribution according to gender, there was a predominance of dentigerous cysts among males and radicular apical cysts among females. Regarding the type of tumors, ameloblasts (35.8%) and odontomas (35.8%) proved to be the most frequent. Moreover, females were more affected by tumors than males (78.6% versus 21.4%). It could be concluded that the prevalence of odontogenic cysts and tumors was low, with a higher incidence in females, especially in individuals above 51 years of age and in the maxilla.
