XAVIER, Angela et al. Oral conditions in an Amazonian population in the state of Rondonia: use and need of prostheses. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2011, vol.47, n.1, pp. 09-17. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: This study aimed to assess the needs and use of prostheses by the population of the town of Monte Negro, Rondonia, Brazil, by means of a sample provided by the "USP in Rondonia Project" during expeditions that took place in July 2009 and January 2010. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of an analysis of medical records of patients attended to during the "USP in Rondonia Project" in July 2009 and January 2010, adopting the index of use and need of prostheses, as set forth by the World Health Organization. The data were analyzed and presented in a descriptive manner, using the chi-square test (p<0.05). Results: Of the 337 records, 42.14% were from men and 57.86% were from women. Regarding the origin of these patients, 36.20% lived in the urban regions of Monte Negro, while 63.80% lived in the rural regions of the town. A total of 40.36% required no use of a prosthetic device, 59.64% required some type of prosthesis, 37.39% needed a prosthesis in the upper and lower arches, 7.72%F required maxillary prosthesis, and 14.54% needed a prosthesis in the lower arch. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest the need for both preventive care and the promotion of oral health in Monte Negro, since the findings illustrated a situation that was worse than that found in Brazil in 2003.
