XAVIER, Alidianne Fábia Cabral; SILVA, Amanda Lúcio do Ó  e  CAVALCANTI, Alessandro Leite. Analysis of the scientific production in dentistry in the Brazilian northeastern region based on data from a dentistry conference. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2011, vol.47, n.3, pp. 127-134. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: To establish the scenario of dental research in the Brazilian Northeastern Region, as based on data from a dentistry conference. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed based on the indirect review of the abstracts published in the annals of the 27th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Association for Dental Research (SBPqO), held in 2010. Three-hundred-and-three abstracts were evaluated and classified according to the state of origin, institution, scientific area, study design, financial support, and research funding agency. Data were collected by two examiners, who applied a specific data questionnaire form. The data were organized and analyzed by the Epi Info v. 3.5.1 software, and presented by descriptive and analytical statistics. The Chi-square test was used for bivariate analyses (p<0.05). Results: Studies in the areas of Preventive and Community Dentistry (24.8%) and Dental Materials (23.4%) were the most prevalent. Paraíba State produced the largest number of scientific studies (31%). Regarding the study design, 49.5% were laboratory studies, only 6% of which used experimental animals, while 38% mentioned the use of human and animal teeth. It was found that 27.4% of the studies had financial support from official institutions, 66.3% granted by CNPq. A statistically significant difference could be observed between the financial support from public and private institutions (p=0.036), but no significant difference could be observed between that from federal and state institutions (p=0.430). Conclusion: The state of Paraiba stands out in the Brazilian Northeastern Region in the production of scientific knowledge in Dentistry published in the annals of the 27th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Association for Dental Research (SBPqO), with public institutions prevailing as the foremost producers of scientific studies. A greater participation of the funding agencies is required to produce research with a greater scientific potential.
