MARINHO, Erika von Söhsten et al. Obsessive compulsive disorder in children and adolescents: literature review and dental approach. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2011, vol.47, n.4, pp. 230-236. ISSN 1516-0939.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder which affects from 1 to 2% of the population of children and adolescents. Patients affected by this disorder need an adequate approach during dental attendance due to an increase in anxiety, medications used in the treatment of OCD and, possibly, due to compulsive behavior. This article aims to carry out a literature review concerning the main features of OCD in childhood and adolescence, as well as reveal important information regarding dental approaches for these patients. After reviewing the literature, it could be concluded that OCD is an anxiety disorder, and for this reason, it is common that these patients have a high possibility of becoming quite anxious during a dental visit. It is therefore very important that the dentist be aware of techniques for controlling behavior and anxiety that are appropriate for these patients. In addition, the dental care provider should evaluate possible interactions with antibiotics, anesthetics, and vasoconstrictors, in an attempt to minimize risks to the patient. The use of antidepressants often results in reduced salivation. Encouraging good oral hygiene (monitoring for compulsive cleaning behavior) associated with the use of fluoride gels and creams, antiseptic mouthwashes, and frequent visits to the dentist can reduce the incidence of rampant dental caries, periodontal disease, and other disorders associated with deficiencies in the production of saliva.
