The project, "Dental treatment for special needs patients", from the Dental School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), has been happen taking place at Associação Mineira de Reabilitação, a rehabilitation center in the state of Minas Gerais, since March 1998. Dental assistance is offered to students of the João Moreira Salles State School. This assistance includes a program of supervised toothbrushing, restorations, supra- and sub-gingival scaling, plaque control, and health education with patients, parents, caretakers, employees, teachers, and a multidisciplinary assistance team. The sessions of clinical assistance addressed the questions of advice on dieting, the application of topical fluoride (as needed), plastic direct restorations, and tooth extractions. The students from the UFMG Dental School have also executed and published several research papers. The data obtained from this study revealed a great contribution of this project to the promotion of health and social inclusion for special needs patients.
