RESENDE, Renata Gonçalves et al. Dental services for hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients from the UFMG Clinical Hospital: extension project. Arq. Odontol. []. 2011, 47, 2, pp. 16-19. ISSN 1516-0939.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is increasingly used effectively to treat various hematological diseases. However, a lack of care with oral cavity or dental treatment can lead to inappropriate systemic problems during the myelosuppression period. The "Dental services for HSCT patients from the UFMG Clinical Hospital" extension project, was founded at the Dental School of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in March 2001 and is responsible for providing dental care to patients who have undergone and will undergo HSCT, in addition to those from the UFMG Clinical Hospitalwho are only undergoing hematological treatment. This study aimed to present the various activities of the "Dental services for HSCT patients from the UFMG Clinical Hospital" extension project, which provides dental care to eligible patients during pre- and post-HSCT. A diversity of restorative, surgical, and educational procedures, among others, are performed weekly. Furthermore, the extension project encourages the development of interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate student activities. In addition, the project plays the role of the generator of knowledge, which aims to better understand and improve HSCT through diverse lines of research. Thus, the "Dental services for HSCT patients from the UFMG Clinical Hospital" extension project plays an important role in teaching, research, and extension activities within the UFMG Dental School, especially concerning HSCT.
