Due to the medical conditions of patients, dentistry in hospitals requires added care in the dental services rendered. The Special Service for Dental Diagnosis and Treatment, Clinical Hospital, Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), founded in 2007, aims to treat patients with systemic complications who are attended to by the dental services at the UFMG Clinical Hospital. The service is carried out by students from the 8th and 9th semesters of the undergraduate course, which receive the opportunity to perform a differentiated and specialized dental care. The patient is then referred by the responsible physician to this specialized care by means of a specialized interconsultation request. The assessment and dental care in the hospital beds are carried out daily in which a visual examination of the oral cavity is performed and advice on oral hygiene is given. The procedure can be performed in the same hospital bed or, in the case of more complex procedures, at the outpatient clinic of Annex Borges da Costa (ABC). The outpatients who have been referred by a doctor are then evaluated and receive the necessary treatment at ABC. Requests for secondary care in dentistry are forwarded to the - UFMG Dental School. Regarding the profile of the referred patients, this study showed a predominance of the adult patients from the city of Belo Horizonte, its metropolitan region, and the countryside of the state of Minas Gerais. The predominant systemic conditions included disease stemming from the blood circulation device, neoplasms, infectious and parasitic diseases and digestive and kidney. It could be observed that there is in fact a need for the inclusion of dental care in the form of a multidisciplinary team to serve all patients. The project offers an opportunity for undergraduate students to learn as well as to provide dental care to patients who need special services. The present study therefore suggests that wider range of good oral conditions can prevent outbreaks of infection and possible disorders within the systemic condition.
