ALFENAS, Elizabeth Rodrigues et al. Prosthetic rehabilitation of patient with loss of substance in the head and neck region. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2011, vol.47, suppl.2, pp. 28-31. ISSN 1516-0939.

Maxillofacial Prosthesis (MFP) is a dental specialty that prosthetically rehabilitates patients who present a loss of substance in the head and neck regions. Patients who lose parts of their faces tend to hide themselves, and are subsequently alienated due to facial mutilation. Those who have lost parts of the mouth have difficulty speaking, swallowing, and chewing. This project aims to rehabilitate patients with facial and/or oral losses, in turn increasing their selfesteem, reintegrating them into society in an attempt to restore their quality of life. Patients referred to the project by the hospital network of Minas Gerais and other states are welcomed by students and volunteers who are coordinated by Professor of the PMF Elective Course. After the completion of medical records and laboratory tests, the rehabilitation of the patient is planned, in which a molding defect, sculpture, proof of sculpture, inclusion of a sculpture, and a press of prosthetic material. The prosthesis is removed from the press material, trimmed, and finished. When finished, the prosthesis is placed on the patient's face and receives a characterization through extrinsic painting, which, with the aid of adhesives, glasses, or implant, is retained on the face or mouth of the patient. Patient satisfaction and recognition of this work by professional dentistry associations in Minas Gerais, gives impetus for the continuation of this project, with the ultimate aim of providing quality of life for patients who suffer a loss of substance in the head and neck regions.
