The Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT) Extension Project was established in 1993. It aims to meet the demand for the periodontal maintenance of patients treated in the Periodontology course at the School of Dentistry of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). Approximately 260 patients are seen annually by undergraduate dental students, in the 4th and 8th semesters, who perform periodontal examinations, subgingival scaling, dental prophylaxis and the application of fluoride, the reinforcement of oral hygiene procedures, as well as periodontal surgeries in sites where diseases have recurred. The interaction among research projects, undergraduate and graduate student teaching, and university extension projects have become a reality through undergraduate, masters, and doctoral projects developed over the eighteen years of SPT Project.
