The "Dental Trauma" program, developed within the the School of Dentistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), together with the Brazilian Unified Health System in Belo Horizonte (SUS/BH), Brazil was put together in 2004 with the main goal of encouraging and coordinating actions aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with traumatic dental injuries. The core component of the program are the services provided by the "Dental Trauma Clinic" at the UFMG School of Dentistry, which has been working on a permanent basis since 1986. Currently, the Program's actions are guided by two major underlying principles. The first principle aims to disseminate the first aid provided at accident sites, in an attempt to render emergency treatment more feasible. In this light, the "Dental Emergencies" project has been developed at the Odilon Berhens Municipal Hospital. The program of health promotion and education is developed with the community through the "Healthcare and Advice on Dental Trauma" Campaign. The other division of the program is the total care provided to the dental trauma patient, especially that regarding the patient's prompt aesthetic rehabilitation, typically one of the most serious side effects stemming from traumatic injuries to anterior teeth. Projects from the UFMG School of Dentistry, such as "Dental Trauma Clinic", "Interceptive Orthodontic Care for Patients with Tooth Injuries", "Dental Care for Children with Injuries to the Primary Dentition", and "Restoration of Traumatized Teeth" are of utmost importance to achieve these goals.
