ALBUQUERQUE, Rodrigo de Castro et al. Restoration of traumatized teeth. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2011, vol.47, suppl.2, pp. 97-100. ISSN 1516-0939.
The "Restoration of traumatized teeth" extension project has been offered by the Department of Restorative Dentistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) since 2005 and has been integrated with other "Dental Trauma" extension program projects from the UFMG School of Dentistry. Its main objective is to conduct restorative treatment, taking into account the functional needs, as well as the psychological and behavioral aspects, of pediatric patients and adolescent victims of dental injuries referred to the UFMG School of Dentistry. This service is carried out by undergraduate students, grant recipients, volunteers, graduate students, and professors. Students participate in weekly dental services and common activities of the study group, where they are directly assessed by teachers. It is expected that the graduate students involved will be able to gain knowledge and experience within a multidisciplinary and comprehensive perspective of dental services provided to the trauma patient. The biomechanical aspects of the approach, as regards the preparation, the relationship with the dental pulp, the principles of occlusion, and the use of resin systems that present a greater diversity of colors which reproduce the dental polychrome allow one to obtain imperceivable dental restorations, in turn raising the technical-scientific level acquired by the undergraduate students. Thus, the project represents a key step in preventing one of the most important sequelae of traumatic injuries of anterior teeth represented by the psychosocial impact caused by the impairment of the aesthetics of permanent anterior teeth.
