AZEVEDO, Amanda Camurça de; VALENCA, Ana Maria Gondim  e  LIMA NETO, Eufrásio de Andrade. Epidemiological profile of dental caries in school children, aged 5 to 12 years of age, who live in the Municipality of Bayeux, Paraiba. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2012, vol.48, n.2, pp. 68-75. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: To analyze the epidemiological profile of children from 5 to 12 years of age who attend public and private schools in the Municipality of Bayeux, Paraiba, Brazil, by means of the Deft and DMPT indices. Materials and Methods: The probability sample consisted in 411 individuals from 5 (n=277) to 12 (n=134) years of age, distributed within 10 census districts of the municipality. Clinical exams were taken by a dental surgeon (Kappa=0.82), trained according to the diagnostic norms recommended by SB BRASIL 2010. For the purpose of analysis, a data base was set up in Excel, and a statistical description was written. Results: It was proven that the Deft/DMFT indices for the ages 5 and 12 were, respectively, 2.86 (+3.07) and 4.19 (+2.66). At 5 years of age, 32.1% showed no problems with caries, but of those that did present problems, 96.5% belonged to the decayed indicator from the Deft index. At 12 years of age, the sample percentage of those with healthy teeth was 9%. The decayed indicator showed the greatest percentage in the index chart (80.9%) for those with a DMFT index of greater than or equal to 1. Conclusion: From the present study, it can be concluded that the rate of dental caries for children at 5 and 12 years of age was especially high in the decayed indicator.
