The aim of the present paper was to describe the course of the Brazilian Medical Practices Bill and carry out a critical reflection on the reasons for its emergence as well as on the consequences of its approval. The methodology involved a review of the bills that gave rise to Bill 25/2002 as well as articles and comments publicized with regard to the proposed legislation. The arguments against the approval of the bill and its effects reveal that the greatest concern of all professionals in the healthcare field is the centralization of actions in the hands of physicians, with a reduction in the autonomy of other healthcare professionals, expressing concerns regarding losses in teamwork and the harmful effects on the healthcare model proposed by the Brazilian Public Health Care System.
