SOUZA, Telma de Almeida  e  MATTOS, Flávio de Freitas. The social representation of smoking among adults and its implications for health: study conducted in a rural community in the state of Minas Gerais. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2012, vol.48, n.3, pp. 159-165. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: The present study aimed to survey the social representation of smoking among adults within a rural community and its implications for health, consequently raising subsidies geared toward the planning of health care initiatives. Materials and Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen adults (somkers, ex-smokers, and nonsmokers), from 30 to 59 years of age, inhabitants of the rural town of Santa Barbara, MG, Brazil, and users of public health services, for a study involving qualitative data analysis. Results: It was possible to classify and separate the study into three basic themes: beginning of the smoking habit, influence on the quality of life, and ending of the smoking habit. Interviewees felt the need for health professionals to be more active in providing support to kick the habit. It was agreed that it is necessary not only to maintain the anti-tobacco advertisements on cigarette packs and expand the number of smoking restricted areas, but also that these measures must be intensified. Conclusions: Anti-smoking actions geared toward young people and families should be increased, given that both directly participate in the beginning of the smoking habit. The creation of support groups may well aid in ending the smoking habit. Reducing the social pressure upon groups in situations of social vulnerability could also help to reduce the number of smokers.
