Aim: To identify the cases of emergency dental care in the Family Healthcare Strategy in Montes Claros, MG, Brazil, characterizing the user profile through sociodemographics, behavioral health, life style and systemic conditions. Materials and Methods: This study applied a quantitative cross-sectional study based on documentation. One hundred sixty-four dental charts, of both adults and the elderly, treated between 2008 and 2010, were evaluated. Data analysis was performed by means of Pearson's chi-square test and the Student t test, considering a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The average age of users was 35.0 years (±12.9), with no statistical difference between genders (p=0.067). Women (63.4%) and literate individuals (97.6%) tended to use the emergency services more often. The presence of systemic disease could be identified in 22.6% of the documents. The average daily brushing was 2.73 (±8.1), with a significant difference for alcoholism and gender (p<0.05). The majority of men and women did not use dental floss (p=0.152). Only approximately 37.2% completed the treatment and were not associated with systemic conditions, smoking, and alcoholism (p>0.05). Pain was the main complaint that led the patient to seek out dental care, with dental caries being the most frequent diagnosis. Conclusions: The majority of people who sought out emergency dental care were female, with an average of 35 years of age. Dental caries was the most frequent complaint, and pain most commonly led the patient to seek out dental care.
