LEITE, Lorena Olegário et al. Gingival condition of adolescents in Vale do Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2013, vol.49, n.2, pp. 75-81. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: This study aimed to describe the gingival condition of adolescents from 15 to 19 years of age in the Vale do Jequitinhonha region. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with a calculated sample of 450 individuals randomly selected from thirteen municipalities, after its stratification in population size and performance of municipal oral health services. The evaluation of the gingival condition was assessed by a single calibrated examiner (Kappa ≥ 0.85). The analysis instrument used was a questionnaire with sociodemographic and habit variables answered by each teen participant. The clinical data were determined using the codes 0, 1, and 2, as defined in the Community Periodontal Index (CPI), performed at the teenager's homes, using a WHO (World Health Organization) type periodontal probe. The assessment was obtained by classifying: the absence of gingivitis CPI = 0; the presence of gingival bleeding on probing CPI = 1, the presence of dental calculus CPI = 2, and the presence of dental calculus and gingival bleeding CPI = 6. Results: Of the 450 adolescents who participated in this study, 16 (3.55%) presented no gingival changes, 235 (52.22%) presented bleeding, 36 (8.00%) presented dental calculus, and 163 (36.22%) presented bleeding and dental calculus. From a total of 2699 sextants, 791 (29.30%) were healthy, 1392 (51.56%) presented bleeding, 94 (3.48%) presented dental calculus, and 422 (15.63%) presented bleeding and dental calculus. One sextant was lost (0.03%). Conclusion: A significant proportion of adolescents present problems with bleeding and calculus.
