LIMA, Daniela Coelho de; PEREIRA, Alessandro Aparecido; SWERTS, Andressa Araújo  e  FERNANDES, Leandro Araújo. Conduct of dentists from the University of Alfenas/MG regarding the emergency treatment of patients with tooth avulsions.. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2013, vol.49, n.4, pp. 169-176. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: To determine the conduct of dentists from Alfenas/MG concerning the emergency treatment of avulsed teeth. Materials and Methods: This study interviewed 72 professionals using a semi-structured questionnaire, analyzing gender, age, period of work experience, and specific questions including the dentist’s conduct of an avulsion-type dental injury, in a wide range of clinical settings. Results:Fifty dentists (69.4%) had treated a case of avulsion, but only 8% reported it as a routine practice. In this study, 56 professionals (77.8%) stated that the optimal time to perform a tooth replantation was immediately after trauma or within 30 minutes at most. As for the immediate treatment of the alveolus, 52.8% of those interviewed would irrigate the regions using saline (0.9% NaCl) without removing the clot; and, for later treatment, 59.7% would use a curette procedure to remove the clot and then irrigate the region with saline. In addition, 52.8% reported using a flexible wire retainer. Regarding occlusal adjustment, 54.2% of those interviewed answered that they would leave the tooth in infraocclusion. Conclusion: The results observed in the study suggest that dentists from Alfenas/MG follow appropriate procedures with respect to dental avulsion when compared to protocols established in literature15 .
