SILVA, Evelyn Darly da et al. Knowledge of Physical Education students about tooth avulsion. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2013, vol.49, n.4, pp. 177-183. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: Evaluate the knowledge and conduct of students from the 5th to 8th periods of the Physical Education course at the University Center of João Pessoa (UNIPÊ) on tooth avulsion. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed with 70 students from the Physical Education department of a private university. Their knowledge on tooth avulsion was evaluated by means of a questionnaire containing 10 objective questions on the proposed theme. The collected data were analyzed by the statistics program SPSS, v.13.0, and worked on as a descriptive statistic, using absolute numbers and percentages. Results: A total of 64.3% reported not having studied the issues related to dental trauma during their undergraduate studies, while 95.7% of the respondents claimed that they had never treated cases of tooth avulsion. The participants affirmed that they would wash the tooth in tap water (20.0%) and would store them in recipients without liquid (21.4%). Conclusion: The Physical Education students showed limited overall knowledge, and the majority have no knowledge of the emergency procedures to be performed in the cases of tooth avulsions Thus, there is a need to implement education programs and training sessions in first-aid procedures regarding tooth avulsions, geared toward Physical Education professors and students from all teaching institutions.
