MIRANDA, Samilly Silva; NEVES, Diana Margarida Prata das; GOMES, Frederico José da Silva  e  CORTE- REAL, Ana Teresa. Estimated age for tooth mineralization using the of Nicodemo, Morais, and Médici Filho (1974) method in a Portuguese population. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2015, vol.51, n.3, pp. 158-164. Aim: This study proposes to analyze the applicability of the radiographic method of estimating age proposed by Nicodemo, Moraes, and Medici Filho (1974) in a young Portuguese population. Methods: According to the proposed method, this study, analyzed the time of the mineralization of permanent teeth in 43 panoramic radiographs. The study population corresponds to 43 children and adolescents, 24 males, and 19 females, of Portuguese nationality, 6 to 11 years of age, residing in the district of Coimbra. The analytical procedures included a descriptive analysis, by obtaining simple and relative frequencies as well as the arithmetic mean and standard deviation measures for age ranges. Results: The analysis of the results allows us to estimate the age at 71% (31) of the participants. As regards gender, the results showed that in 75% of the analyzed panoramic radiographs of the male participants, the chronological age was situated in the range found. Regarding the female, it was found that 68.4% of the ages were within the obtained intervals. To obtain the mean ages with their respective standard deviation, it could be observed that the estimated age of between 96-108 months proved to be quite close to chronological age. Conclusion: The data suggest that the assessment of the estimation of the age of the Portuguese population calculated by this method can aid in the identification process. However, adaptations for this population were necessary, regarding the ages that were underestimated or overestimated. Moreover, a more experienced team in using this method was deemed necessary.
