BATISTA, Rony de Jesus; FERREIRA, Lorena  e  RAFAEL, Stela Neuza Freitas. Review of dental survival rates after periodontal treatment and supportive periodontal therapy in studies with at least 15 years of follow-up. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2016, vol.52, n.2, pp. 80-87. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: To check the percentage and the average tooth loss per patient as a result of periodontal disease after Active Periodontal Therapy (APT) and Supportive Periodontal Therapy (SPT) in studies with at least 15 years of follow-up. Methods: The search for articles published on the topic was conducted in the electronic database MEDLINE (via PubMed), from 1978 to January 2014. All articles had a minimum follow-up time of 15 years, in which the expected result was the long-term survival of periodontically treated teeth. Results: Eight studies were selected and discussed, including seven restrospective articles and one case-control article, which contained all of the inclusion criteria required for this literature review. Conclusion: These studies reported a variation of 1.8% to 13.4% of tooth loss for periodontal reasons and an average of 0.04 to 3.49 missing teeth per patient. Therefore, the decision to keep periodontally compromised teeth for as long as possible appears to provide a feasible solution for dentists, while still preserving the philosophy of preventive dentistry.
