ALMEIDA, Ana Maria Ribeiro de; GURGEL, Glauco Silva Cerávolo Amaral; CAMPOS, Cecília Godoi  e  GUIMARAES, Eliete Albano de Azevedo. Access to dental implant osseointegrated in the Unified Health System (SUS): description of the national panorama. Arq. Odontol. [online]. 2016, vol.52, n.3, pp. 145-153. ISSN 1516-0939.

Aim: To verify the access to osseointegrated dental implants in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Methods: This is a descriptive, epidemiological study, conducted by means of secondary data obtained from DATASUS, and is related to the carrying out of osseointegrated dental implants at SUS, defined by region in Brazil, from January 2011 to December 2014. For the descriptive analysis of the data, a frequency distribution was carried out according to gender, race, age group, location of procedure, and calculation of the indicators - number of osseointegrated dental implants per thousand inhabitants per region, number of osseointegrated dental implants per thousand inhabitants in Brazil, and average number of osseointegrated dental implants received by patients who truly needed dental implants. Results: The Southern region of Brazil was responsible for the largest number of dental implants in the country (81.75%); the number of procedures carried out in the Northeastern region of Brazil represented only 0.5% of all implants carried out in the country; the Southeastern and Midwestern regions of the country, together, carried out less than 20% of the total number of implants; while the Northern region has not yet performed any osseointegrated dental implants. Females (63%), whites (49%), and the 20-59 year-old age group (67.8%) had the most access to osseointegrated dental implants at SUS. Dental Specialty Clinics were responsible for 79.2% of the osseointegrated dental implants, while 11.5% were performed in hospitals. As regards the Brazilian population, the number of osseointegrated dental implants per thousand inhabitants was 0.14. Conclusion: Access to osseointegrated dental implants at SUS represents an enormous advance in the integrity of Oral Health Care in Brazil, but it is still in its early stages and is very unequal throughout Brazil.
