Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the periodontal status and level of oral hygiene in smokers and non smokers enrolled in the Clinic of Dentistry, State University of Paraíba. A prospective study examining 30 patients, including 15 smokers (Group I) and 15 non-smokers (Group II). All components of the sample were subjected to a questionnaire and examination to determine the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified, the Periodontal Attachment Loss in Recession Vestibular and lingual or palate and tooth mobility. Through the Oral Hygiene Index Simplified, Group I showed 53.3% of regular oral hygiene and Group II 63.7%, and the gingival index, Group I and Group II had mild gingivitis 86.7% and 66.7% respectively. Group II had 20.0% in moderate gingivitis, while Group I, 13.3%. In Group I, 33% had periodontitis, twice as many Group II (14%), relative to Index Insertion Loss, Group I showed a greater insertion loss of 4.4% with a loss of 9-11mm, predominantly in region of central incisor and lateral lower (60%), buccal recession in Group I was in (61.2%), while Group II had 38.8%, already in recession lingual Group I showed 70.9% and Group II 29.1%. The tooth mobility occurred only in Group I (100%), with 57% grade II and 43% grade I. The results showed that patients in Group I showed higher values with respect to the indexes studied, confirming the negative influence of smoking on the periodontal condition.
