determine the dentists' perception of the Family Health Strategy Program (Federal government project) in Campina Grande-PB in approaching patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: It was a "before and after" intervention study, with 33 professionals interviewed. A semi-structured questionnaire was used, applied before and after an informative lecture. The statistical test used was the McNemar (significance level of 5%). Results: All professionals knew the meaning of Diabetes Mellitus, and the knowledge about the variations of this disease w as improved after the informative lecture (39.4% X 97%, p<0.001). In the first interview 54.6% knew about the diabetic symptomatology, and after lecture 97% showed this knowledge. 69.7% knew what was the best time to attend a diabetic patient, and this percentage increased to 100% in the second interview. The worst results were about anti-inflammatory prescription (9.1% X 63,6%, p< 0.001). The professionals knew about the surgical maneuvers to be done with diabetic patients, and this knowledge was consolidated after the lecture. Initially, 42.4% participated on HIPERDIA (Federal Government Health Program for hypertensive and diabetic patients) and, in the end, the participation in this plan changed to 54.5% (p=0.012). Conclusions: The informative lecture increased the knowledge of professionals on the subject and the university, as an opinion maker, should participate in the education of professionals contributing to the resolution of problems experienced in health services.
