To conduct the screening of in vitro essential oils' antifungal activity from Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree), Cymbopogon winterianus (citronella) and Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) on strains of Candida albicans (ATCC289065) - M1, Candida krusei (ATCC40147) - M2 and Candida tropicalis (ATCC13803) - M3. Material and Method: The antifungal activity of essential oils was determined by agar diffusion technique. Fungal suspension (1.5 x 106 organisms/ml) were sowed in Sabouraud Dextrose agar, which were distributed on four discs of sterile paper. The specimens were inundated with 50μl of tested solutions and control in pure formulation. The tests were performed in triplicate and nystatin (commercial suspension - 100,000 IU/ml) served as control. The inhibition areas of fungal growth in millimeters were measured and analyzed descriptively by obtaining means and standard deviation. Result: For M. alternifolia, C. winterianus, R. officinalis and Nystatin, the average of the inhibition growth zones were, respectively: 12.0(+2,64), 28.3(+9,60), 9.6(+2,08) and 11.6(+0,58) to M1; 10.0(+0,0), 13.3(+0,58), 9.3(+0,58) and 9.6(+0,58) to M2; and 10.3(+0,58), 26.3(+6,35), 8.6(+0,58) and 10.6(+0,58) to M3. Conclusion: In this study conditions, was concluded that the essential oils from C. winterianus, M. alternifolia and R. officinalis showed antifungal activity against the tested strains.
