GABRIELA TALITA, Camera et al. The dental surgeon hole in buccal health maintenance of down syndrome patient. Odontol. Clín.-Cient. (Online) [online]. 2011, vol.10, n.3, pp. 247-250. ISSN 1677-3888.

The Down Syndrome is a chromossomic alteration, characterized essentially by a development delay, in motor functions, as in language, the patients could also present variable degrees of mental retard. Some dental anomalies are observed. Because of motor restriction or even for lack of professional motivation and orientation, many patients present precarious oral hygiene. The objective of this work was to verify if the professional orientation and supervision interfere on biofilm dental index in Down Syndrome patients and also if the motivation and instruction given by professional persist even if the professional is absent, only with parent and teacher´s supervision. The work was accomplished with 10 Down Syndrome patients, from a special Cascavel´s school (7 to 15 years old), using dental biofilm control weekly through the Index of Oral Hygiene Simplified (IOHS). The results demonstrated that dental surgeon presence, orientation and motivation, improve statistically significant (Tukey test, p≤0,001) buccal hygiene of these patients, based on IOHS. However, the results also show that over time, without professional guidance, the oral care quality is not so good. We also observed that Down Syndrome patients, since oriented, motivated and supervised get to collaborate with the hygiene and maintain a good biofilm control.
