The objective was to assess the profile of farmers deaths from external causes of farmers in small municipalities of Paraíba. Methods: This is a descriptive and analytical, cross-sectional study. It was conducted at the Department of Legal Medicine and Dentistry of Guarabira, which covers 32 small towns. All reports of cadaveric examinations (319) between 2003 and 2007 which described the profession as farmer were included in the research. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were applied. Results: In the sample 90.9% were male, 95.6% mixed race, 35.7% aged over 45 years and 46.4% literate. The leading causes of death were asphyxia 28.8%, followed by traffic accidents with 23.5%, firearms 17.6% and bladed weapons 13.8%. Conclusions: The relationship between the instrument causing the death and the place of occurrence of the fact, the repercussion of lesions on the maxillofacial region, education and age of the victim was statistically significant. For farmers in small towns of Paraíba the leading cause of death is asphyxia.
