Objective: To know the factors that had motivated the option for the dentistry course and the expectations concerning the profession of surgeon-dentist to a group of pupils. Materials and methods: The research is classified as a descriptive study, of transversal cut. The target population consisted of 228 pupils registered the initial periods and last periods. The sample was not probabilistic, having been gotten for convenience. The instrument of collection of data was himself questionnaire. The data collection period occurred in the second semester of 2010. Results: The research group was composed of 47% of the pupils, whose ages ranged 17-33 years and 57% were female. The more cited reasons to the choice for the dentistry had been: admiration for the profession and compensating profession in financial terms. To initiate the profession, the majority desires to work as independent; it does not intend to have a parallel activity to the dentistry and will attend a course specialization. Conclusion: the gotten results had evidenced that the expectations with regard to the profession and the reasons of the option for the Dentistry are similar for the academics of initial periods and final periods.
