The objective of this study was to describe the prospects of dental students in relation to the labor market and compare the expectations among beginners academics and graduates of a private institution in the municipality of Belo Horizonte, in 2013. For data collection was applied, a sample of 255 undergraduate students (1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th periods), a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was performed frequency distribution, chi-square test and Fisher's exact test at a 5% significance level. Most students considered satisfactory labor market (46.8%) had claim to work in private practices (66.6%) in the city of Belo Horizonte and the metropolitan area (55.7%), with salaries around five thousand reais (44.3%). When compared to the beginning students with the graduates, it was observed that starters had more interest (p = 0.006) in working in private practice, getting three salaries to five thousand (p = 0.008) and above five thousand reais (p = 0.003). Thus, it is concluded that the graduating students have a more realistic view of the labor market, as were more likely to work in the public sector and wage claim is within the offered by the market.
