Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem, involving high costs for the treatment of patients. The aim of the present study is to discuss the importance of the knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus and care related to dental interventions in diabetic patients. We performed a review of literature by searching articles in the databases PubMed/Medline, Lilacs, Scopus and Scielo, published between 2000 and 2015. The dentist should be alert to signs such as loss of weight and polyphagia, suggestive of type I diabetes, or hypertension and obesity, which suggest type II diabetes. Clinical parameters of periodontium, such as the amount of biofilm, gingival bleeding and probing depth, should be evaluated. In uncontrolled diabetes, tends to occur complications such as pain and infection, requiring the postponement of clinical sessions. Dental visits in the morning are recommended, as well as the rational use of anesthetics associated to adrenergic vasoconstrictor. Patients undergoing insulin therapy have increased susceptibility to hypoglycemia during dental procedures. Diabetic patients, if well controlled by multidisciplinary team, can be treated safely and efficiently. We emphasize the importance of medical history as a source of information related to patient's condition, providing adequate treatment planning.
